Early Career

Dhoni made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar in the 1999—2000 season as an 18 year old. He made a half-century in his debut match scoring 68* runs against Assam Cricket Team. He finished the season with 283 runs in five matches. He went on to score his first century in a Ranji match against Bengal in the 2000-01 season. Dhoni soon started gaining recognition for his hard-hitting batting style. In the 2003-04 season, he was selected for the India A squad for India’s tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya. He kept up to his reputation as a wicket-keeper. His performance in the series caught the attention of the then Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri. In time, he also became captain of the ODI and Test squads.

With this feat, India became the number one Test team. In March 2013, Dhoni became the most successful Indian Test captain. After the 2014-15 tour of Australia, Dhoni retired from the Test format of cricket.
