Cricket History

All Cricket research agrees at the game of cricket is derived from a very old, widespread and uncomplicated pastime in which one player threw an object, be it a small piece of wood or a ball, and another hit it with a custom- fashioned club. It is widely agreed that the first recorded evidence of cricket being played was in Guildford, Surrey,England, around 1550. The first reference to cricket being played outside England was in 1676 in Aleppo, Syria. The first official international match was played in 1844 between Canada and the USA. The game spread to different parts of the world, especially in the Common wealth of Nations.

Test Cricket

Team India in test match

The first ever Test match was played between England and Australia in 1877 on the Melbourne Cricket Ground which is the historic venue for the 2015 World Cup final,’ Australia won this first ever Test match by 45 runs. Twelve years later, South Africa played its first Test match. And, in 1909, the Imperial Cricket Conference (which would later become the International Cricket Council or ICC)was founded by the three Test-playing nations.

In 1910, the concept of sixes was introduced for any hit over the boundary. Earlier, a batsman had to send the ball outside the ground to get six runs! Nearly two decades later, the West Indies in 1928, New Zealand in 1930 and India in 1932 joined the Test nations. In 1952, five years after Pakistan became a separate country, it too became a Test-playing nation. However, Test cricket was slow to embrace other nations.

One Day International (ODI) Cricket

on 1 May 1963, England gave birth to One-day cricket during the first match of the Gillette cup, Lancashire versus Leicestershire, which was staged at old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. Australia followed with its first domestic ODI tournament in 1969-70. Despite the growing popularity of the shorter formats in both countries, astonishingly, the first ever official ODI was born of circumstances rather than design. After the first two Test matches of the Ashes series of 1970-71 resulted in a draw, the third match at the MCG was severely affected by rain.

There was no play on the first four days of the third Test match and in a desperate attempt to please the paying public who had come to see some action, the last day of the match was forcibly conceived as a ‘compressed Test match’. However, there was a touch of indecisiveness on the part of the two cricket boards to give the match official endorsement and hence the teams were called England XI and Australia Xl. Little did anyone realize that this match would ultimately revolutionize the course of cricket. Of course, One-day cricket took a while to make its presence felt as only matches were played in the first 24 years, but the World Cup provided the ultimate impetus to this format of the game.

After the success of domestic One-day competitions, the six Test-playing nations – England, Australia, New Zealand, west Indies, India and Pakistan – were joined by sri Lanka and East Africa in the first world cup held in England in 1975. Yet the enormity and significant of the first ever attempt at a World Championship did not excite everyone involved with thc game at that point of time. It was not until the World Series Cricket, a breakaway professional cricket competition staged between 1977 and 1979, created by Kerry Packer for his Australian television network, the Nine Network, that ODI cricket got a boost.

Day-Night Cricket

For almost a decade after its inception, ODI cricket was not very different from Test cricket. White flannels, day matches, red balls and nearly the same kinds of rules and regulations. However, day-night cricket introduced a radical change. On 27 November 1979, the first ever day-night ODI was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground between the hosts. Australia, and the West Indies. However, the real credit should go to the Australian media-mogul Packer, who pioneered day-night cricket,
thanks to his rebel World Series Cricket.

From the 201 i World Cup onwards, the format was reworked largely keeping in mind that along with India, all the major nations should not be knocked out due to one or two upsets before the quarter-finals. Ironically, ODI cricket, which not only rejuvenated the game, but also made it more inclusive for other nations, is now in danger of losing its relevance. Since the advent of T20 cricket, numerous franchise-based leagues have mushroomed and they are severely affecting international cricket’s schedule. Questions are being raised about the importance and relevance of the ODI format in modern-day cricket. Decidedly, it is up to the World Cup to keep this format alive„

history of indian cricket

According to the official website of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the earliest recorded reference to cricket in India was sometime in 1721 when sailors from a British ship docked off the Kutch coast in Gujarat played the game. The first recorded cricket match in India was in 1751, when the British army took on the English settlers. Reportedly, the Parsis, the first Indian civilian community to take to cricket, set up the Oriental Cricket Club in Mumbai in 1848. It died an early death and the community established the Young Zoroastrians Club in 1850, after which the Hindu Gymkhana was formed in 1866. to read more please visit….
